Drew Barrymore’s intimate and personal interviewing approach encountered a formidable counterpart in Martha Stewart during their conversation on the actress’s daytime talk show this past Tuesday.
Stewart appeared to discuss her latest cookbook, and perhaps inspired by the mention of a dessert recipe, Barrymore posed the question, What makes you soft and gooey?
Stewart echoed the question before dryly responding, Soft and gooey treatment. Barrymore, known for her heartfelt interviewing style that often leans towards the sentimental, placed a hand on Stewart’s shoulder and began to rub her back while asking, When you’re treated like a lady.
However, Stewart remained unfazed as always; she maintained a hilariously stoic demeanor, shared a knowing wink with the audience, and gently pushed Barrymore away while saying, You’re the wrong gender. In response, Barrymore reclined on the couch with a playful remark of I know, I know, eliciting laughter from both Stewart and the audience.
(It’s worth noting that since Stewart has been on Barrymore’s show several times before, it seems unlikely that she was genuinely surprised by this interaction.)
In conjunction with the launch of her 100th cookbook, Stewart has made an appearance in a new Netflix documentary titled Martha, which chronicles her life and career.
Although the film has garnered positive reviews and Stewart was involved in its production, she recently voiced her dissatisfaction regarding various aspects, including the soundtrack, camera work, and storytelling choices during an interview with The New York Times.
She remarked that director R.J. Cutler had complete access to her but chose to utilize very little of it, which she found surprising. In particular, she criticized the concluding scenes where she felt depicted as a solitary elderly woman bent over in her garden.
Despite her request for those scenes to be removed, Cutler declined. I hate those last scenes, she stated emphatically. I hate them.
