Trump and Zelenskyy have their first conversation post-election amid uncertainties surrounding Ukraine’s future.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared that he had a chat with President-elect Donald Trump, congratulating him on his significant election victory.

Zelenskyy is looking for ongoing support from the U.S. as Ukraine continues its fight against Russia. He took to X to describe their conversation as excellent and celebrated Trump’s historic landslide victory, crediting his impressive campaign for the outcome.

Zelenskyy expressed admiration for Trump’s family and team, emphasizing the importance of keeping an open line of communication and enhancing cooperation between their countries. He mentioned that strong U.S. leadership is crucial not just for global stability but also for achieving a fair peace.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been pouring billions into military aid for Ukraine since Russia invaded two and a half years ago.

However, there’s uncertainty about future U.S. assistance under Trump, who has previously made flattering remarks about Putin and was vague during a September debate about whether he supports Ukraine’s victory in the war.

Trump stated his desire for the conflict to end and claimed he could resolve it before taking office on January 20, but didn’t elaborate on how that would happen.

During his campaign, Trump accused Zelenskyy of playing favorites in American politics and criticized financial support aimed at Ukraine’s war efforts.

Vice President-elect JD Vance has also voiced opposition to funding Ukraine while in the Senate. It’s worth noting that back in 2019, a controversial phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy resulted in Trump threatening to cut off U.S. aid unless an investigation into Joe Biden and his son Hunter was launched—this incident led to Trump’s first impeachment.

Interestingly enough, just last month, Trump met with Zelenskyy in New York right after Zelenskyy had a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington!
