Vision Care After 65: What Medicare Doesn’t Cover
Good vision keeps you safe, independent, and connected — but many older adults are surprised to learn that Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine eye care. Here’s what is and isn’t covered, and how to protect both your eyes and your budget.
What Medicare does NOT cover
Original Medicare generally does not pay for routine eye exams, eyeglasses, or contact lenses. If you need a new prescription or new glasses, you’ll usually pay out of pocket.
What Medicare DOES cover
Medicare does help with medical eye problems. That includes things like cataract surgery (and one pair of corrective glasses afterward), and screenings or treatment for conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration for people at risk. The key difference: Medicare covers medical eye care, not routine vision care.
Your options to cover the gap
Medicare Advantage: many plans include a routine vision benefit — check the details. Standalone vision insurance or a vision discount plan: low-cost ways to reduce the price of exams and glasses. Retail options: warehouse clubs and online eyeglass sellers can be much cheaper than a traditional optical shop.
Tips to save
Ask your eye doctor for your prescription and pupillary distance so you can shop around for glasses, including online. Compare the cost of a vision plan against how often you buy glasses. And don’t skip exams to save money — many serious eye and health conditions are caught during a routine check.
Protecting your eyes
Get your eyes checked regularly, wear sunglasses that block UV, manage conditions like diabetes and blood pressure, and eat eye-healthy foods rich in leafy greens and omega-3s. Catching problems early is the best way to keep your sight sharp.
